Pleural effusion as signs of pneumonia

The most common cause of a bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae. Call your doctor if you have signs of pneumonia and a weak immune system (for example such as with HIV or chemotherapy). Because your lungs are weakened, your doctor may use an antibiotic to prevent you from developing a bacterial pneumonia. Nosocomial infections have been viewed as a “tribute to pay to the more aggressive management of the population, characterized by the use of sophisticated technologies and invasive devices,” an important consideration in the pulmonary care of critically ill patients.
The pathophysiology of pneumonia caused by fungi is similar to that of bacterial pneumonia. Healthy people can usually fight off pneumonia infections. Children with pneumonia can develop a pleural effusion or empyema, which sometimes need to be drained.
